About Wonderland of Dolls · Putul

Putul.in is a cultural encyclopedia of dolls — a growing library dedicated to the small figures that humans everywhere have made, played with, prayed to and treasured.

Why “Putul”?

Putul is the Bengali and Assamese word for “doll”; gudiya is its Hindi cousin. We chose the name because dolls are at once deeply local — shaped by the language, cloth and beliefs of a particular place — and utterly universal. Almost every culture on earth has made them. This site sets out to honour both truths.

What you’ll find here

Our approach to accuracy

We research from reputable sources — museums, cultural institutions and established references — and write in our own words. The history of dolls is a living field, and datings and attributions are sometimes debated among scholars; where that is the case, we say so rather than pretend to false certainty. If you spot an error, we genuinely want to hear about it.

Who it’s for

Whether you make dolls, collect them, study them, teach with them, or simply remember a beloved childhood companion, there is a doorway here for you. Our aim is to be the most useful, trustworthy and beautifully presented resource on dolls anywhere on the web.
